WELLINGTON’S BEAUTY

Mr. Alan Mulgan’s Tribute

Writing to the “Auckland Star” recently in, reply to critical comparisons between New Zealand cities made in its columns, Mr. Alan Muigan, formerly of Auckland and now of Wellington, wrote as follows: —

As one who, after living many years in Auckland is now settled in Wellington, I should like to supplement, on one point, what “Remuera” said in the "Star” on December 31. I do not wish to make any comparisons between the two cities in the way they are governed, but just to stry something about the beauty of Wellington and its general attractiveness.

I have lived in Wellington for three years and have grown to like it more and more. It is a very beautiful city. It has, of course, its biots, but so has every city in New Zealand. Its surroundings are superb, and in certain weather, which is more common than many people realize, the beauty of hills and sea is almost incredible. Some people have been surprised when I have saiel this. Too many pass through Wellington without really getting to know it. They walk up and down the query or Willis Street, but do not go up one of the many hills or take a run round the bays. I should doubt whether there are any views of the kind anywhere liner than the panorama from Wadestown or Kelburn or Mount Victoria or the top of the Wainui-o-mata Road.

Moreover, though it Is not. as easy to make a garden in Wellington as it is in Auckland, there are many beautiful gardens in and round Wellington. In the bay where I live, with the. sea in front and bush behind, there are two fit to go into a New Zealand collection. The beauty of Auckland is different from the beauty of Wellington. Let us enjoy both. I write this only because I feel that the beauty of Wellington is insufiiciently appreciated find that there are visitors to Wellington who, for want of guidance, miss something that is very well worth seeing.
