VUIIEN they entered Hie toy department of the big store, ibev .-aw a young-looking Father Christmas surrounded by large boxes of crackers. “Educational crackers!” rent! father in surprise.
"Not sums and scales and tilings, surely!” exclaimed .Monica. “Let's see,” said Father Christmas. “Have one with me.” he added to little Michael. > Michael's mother was nervous. “He's so small, the bang might frighten him.” Father Christmas grinned. ’This is one for the toddlers.” he repin'd. “No bang; only a funny little quack!” Michael loved it. particularly when he found inside a white duck made of floating soap. Then Monica had one wit!) her fa flier. Excitedly they looked to see what it contained. "Pwaps it's a efelant.” suggested Michael. But. no. it was a nice little toothbrush. Monica read the motto:—
“If teeth like pearls to you appeal, Use me. dear, after every meal ” “Very ingenious.” said father “Perhaps you are the inventor?” Father Chyistmas admittted that be wns. “I’m a mere medical siudent.” he explained, “But promoted tc be Father Christinas for a week. The crackers were made by boys belonging to a club we run. We are very keen on teaching better health and hygiene.” “So ami.” said Michael, “and welly keen on qnackers. too.” Father bought several boxes, even though they were more expensive than ordinary crackers. He pulled one with mother. “I’waps it’s only a cap.” said Michael, and it. was. But what a cap! No flimsy affair this. What was the motto? “If clean when dusting you would be, Protect your hair by wearing me.” “Nothing could be more sensible inside or outside of crackers,” said father. Then it was his turn to grin as he,said goodbye to Father Christmas. “You’ see. I’m a doctor myself.”
