SEAMAN IN TROUBLE
Jail For Deserting; Fine For Smuggling
By Telegraph—Frees Association. AUCKLAND. December 16.
Two weeks’ imprisonment for deserting tlie steamer Rotorua at New Plymouth and a fine of £5O for smuggling dutiable goods, consisting of clothing, perfumes and leather goods, valued at £2O, were penalties imposed by the magistrate, Mr. C; R. Orr-Walker, when Harry Campbell, alias Parke, aged 38. seaman, admitted both charges.
The police said that dockets in Campbell’s possession showed that he purchased goods valued at £6O before leaving England and letters showed that he offered to sell the goods at cheap prices.
Addressing the magistrate, Campbell said he intended to raffle the goods on the voyage. He applied to the captain for permission to leave the ship in New Zealand but was refused. At the Glasgow Exhibition he had been offered an agency in New Zealand so he left the ship at New Plymouth.
