Magistrate’s Warning Of Licence Endorsements

“I have previously and will in future, if the circumstances warrant it. endorse the licences of persons convicted of dangerous driving,” said Mr. A. Al. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Upper Hutt, yesterday, when lining Hugh Fahey, Petone, £5, costs 10/-, for driving in a manner that might have been dangerous. “Aly experience is that the Transport Department or police do not charge anyone with dangerous driving unless there is a clear case of a driver doing something endangering himself, or, more frequently, others,” said the magistrate. Inspector Nicholson said that on the second day of the October race meeting at Trenthnm defendant drove from the principal racecourse road on to the main highway at a fast speed and across the road on to his incorrect side. He passed two cars going off the bitumen and on to the gravel on his incorrect side to do so, repeating this a mile farther on. This time he almost struck an approaching bus. There were six people in the car besides defendant. For Fahey Mr. D. M. Dickson said that he had aboard a Constable McQuarrie, who had backed the winner of the Inst race and had to wait some time to collect his dividend. Constable McQuarrie wanted to connect with the express steamer and there was not much time left for Fahey to get him back to AVeilington.

Cyclist’s Leg Broken. Francis Earle AVinhie, Lower Hutt, was fined £l/10/-, costs 13/-, for driving without due care and attention. Constable F. J. Williams said ,that Winnie swerved his van suddenly off the bitumen on to the macadam, striking a man named I-Iyslop who was about to dismount from his cycle and breaking one of his legs. Joseph Jackson and Son Ltd. were fined £2/10/-, costs 12/-, for operating a lorry in excess of the licensed loud.

“Passed Everything.” “He passed everything on the road and was insolent when stopped/’ said Inspector U. A. J. Peterson in the case of Richard Dennis Leighton Darke, Brooklyn, who was fined £l/10/-, costs 10/-, for exceeding the borough speed limit. Similarly charged, Alfred James Coleman, Wellington, and Lucy Frances Lowry, Fernhill, Hawke's Bay, were each fined £l/10/-. costs 10/- and 12/- respectively, Edward Grenville Thompson, Lower Hutt, £l/5/-. with costs 11/-, and Amy B. Smith, AVeilington, £2, costs 10/-. Dudley K. Little, Lower Hutt, was fined 5/-, costs 10/-, for not carrying a warrant of fituess. Failed to Give Signal. Ernest AVilliam Baillie, who appeared on crutches, was ordered to pay costs, 10/-, for failing to signal his intention to turn while cycling. Victor Norman Olat Christopherson, Miramar, said he was driving on the main road at Trentham when- he saw three cyclists ahead. The one on the outside, Baillie, turned without indicating his intention to do so, and he struck him. Baillie received a broken leg. "Mabel Fenn was fined 10/-, costs 10/-, for cycling at night without a light. Allen Patrick AValker. similarly charged, was fined £l, costs 12/-. Ronald S.. Ingram AVeilington, a motor-cyclist, was fined £2, costs 10/-. for having a defective light nt night. The magistrate said this was dangerous,
