Mystery Island
TN the Pacific, 2000 miles from Chile, is Easter Island, one of the world’s loneliest spots and a place of mystery. Here, dotted about, are over 500 huge images, some 70 feet high. They are very old and no one knows who carved them. Some have hats of different coloured stone,
The sea is very deep around the island and some scientists think that Easter Island may be the highest part of a lost continent which sunk beneath the waves ages ago, for the images are not like any others anywhere else in the world. Also there are some woodcarvings in a language no learned professors have ever been able to make out. There are three white men and 20b natives (kanakas) on the island, which is used as a sheep ranch.—Jasmine (13), Johnsonville.
