Fabries for upholstery are as serviceable as they are decorative in design and colour. These fabrics are being made in greater numbers than ever in heavy textiles for upholstery and curtains and in lighter fabrics such as chintzes,' cretonnes, linens, and silks suitable for making loose curtains and covers and for lampshades, cushions, and other forms of coverings, so that the choice is distinctly wide and varied.

Two sets of sporting prints—one of four hunting prints and one set of four illustrating the “First Steeplechase” are showing at Robin and Co., 17 Grey Street. They have been printed from the original old plates which are dated 1838. The narrow black frames are in perfect taste and either set would be ideal for a billiard-room or hall. Numberless small things for Christmas gifts are an added attraction at Robin and Co. just now.

It is surprising how only a few new pieces of furniture are required to transform a room. All unnecessary bric-a-brac, including pictures, of course, must be removed, and ruthlessly relegated to the boxroom. Instead, use one or two modern prints, a pair of candlesticks, and flower vases in modem design, particularly one or two of the latest pottery jars. ♦ ♦ ♦

The addition of a georgette or sheer coat transforms a light frock into a chic street ensemble universally becoming. A navy georgette coat with scalloped edges and a belt, and one of black sheer which has the seams outlined with black Tic rac braid, and a gold buckle are two among a good selection at Wilson’s, 52 Willis Street.

A favourite style for jersey blouses combines a fitting yoke, with shirt collar, a draped bodice rucked on to the yoke, and either leg-o’-mutton or bishop sleeves, or a combination of the two. , • »

For effective lighting at the dinner table it is a good plan to place a ring of medium length candles in individual holders around a centre bowl of fruit or flowers.

For a sparkling wash without effort on your part ring 63-000—the Ideal Bag Wash Laundry.

“Pastel cashmeres” are the newest contribution to the coat story. They appear in shades of ice blue, corn gold, dirty pink, to pick up the lighter colours of a check suit, or match accesswies on a dark suit.

The new longer jacket — about hip-length—and banded with black embroidered in emerald green, looks well over a tailored dress.

An ideal ensemble for a warm climate can be made from uncrushable linen — a tailored suit, natural-coloured, and a finger-length coat in a darker shade. Neither the jacket nor the coat has any revers, but both are high-buttoning, and the coat has four pockets.

A new shipment, from London, of beautiful table and bedroom linen goods is just being unpacked by Pamela Harris, 27 Cambridge Terrace. They include -all the latest smart ideas and are, of course, unequalled for price and quality.

Again there is novelty in jewellery: Vionnet uses jewelled clasps; Leiong shows big gold stars; Mainbocher holds the drapes of a neckline with a pearl necklace slipper through the draping; Maggy Rouffi makes jewellery in the shape of bunches of grapes; Rosevienne uses gold “torch” brooches with pink stones for the “flames”; and also evening combs worn at the side of the head, covered either with the dress fabric or with sequins. Lanvin is another to advocate grape jewellery, in necklaces or bracelets.

Many remedies and treatments have been advocated but there is only one treatment which surpasses every other known remedy for banishing skin and scalp diseases —this is the famous “Kiexema” treatment. Visit the Klexema Rooms, Harcourt’s Buildings, Panama Street, or ring 42-882.

Old chairs —or the suite —can be given loose covers in a modernistic fabric. And old-fashioned gilt mirrors can have their frames removed and replaced ‘by simple wooden ones, painted and lacquered in a colour to harmonise with the general scheme of a room.

« ♦ • ■ Are you buying at least one Christmas present this year from the Disabled Soldiers’ Shop? They have hosts of attractive gifts, most of them hand made, from 1/- upward.

■ Mainbocker designs evening dresses that are starkly tailored, brightened only by a swift and striking Hash of embroidery or colour, as in his tight black satin dress, draped high in front, and slit decisively to show a short red and green petticoat beneath.
