CAPTAIN JAMES COOK
Centennial Memorials At
Seven Places
ERECTION RECOMMENDED
Suggestions by Captain J. D. McComish. Sydney, fur the erection of centennial memorials at seven places in New Zealand prominently associated with Captain James Cook —Anaura Bay, Tolaga Bay, Mercury Bay, the . River Thames, Bay of Islands, Admiralty Bay and Dusky Sound-—were submitted to the Government for most favourable consideration by the National Centennial Council at its meeting in AVellington this week. Captain McComish’s suggestions were made to the National Historical Committee, which appointed a subcommittee to consider them. The subcommittee was also asked to consider the general question of marking historic spots in New Zealand, and its report was forwarded to the National Centennial Council. The recommendation is that the marking of historic spots lie carried out by tlie Government so as to ensure uniformity in the design of memorials. It suggests tliat a suitable memorial would be a metal plate not exceeding 12in. by 18in., attached to a rock or other natural feature. Such plates are to be of uniform design of the utmost simplicity and they are to bear a brief historical inscription to be' drawn up in each case by a sub-committee of the National Historical Committee.
