Wellington v. St. Patrick’s

A cricket match between the first elevens of Wellington College and St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, was played on the Wellington College ground yesterday afternoon and resulted in a draw. The wicket was on the soft side and a blustering north-westerly wind caused the ball to cut queer capers in the air at times. Play started at 2.10, when Wellington won the toss and had first use of the ticket. The feature of the innings was a sound display by D. E. Vause, who went in first wicket down and was unbeaten with 102 to his credit when the innings was declared closed at 4.30 p.m. with 169 runs on for the loss of nine wickets. Vause showed sound defence but came down hard on everything short or overpitched. He found the boundary nine times. Hastings, Metcalfe, Guthrie and Marshall were the most successful bowlers for St. Patrick’s College. When stumps were drawn at six o’clock. St. Patrick's College had 77 runs on for the loss of three wickets. Newton and Metcalfe, the captain, made a serviceable stand for the fourth wicket and both -tvere " O iii" stronglv when time was called. Cass, a “left-hander, and Marshall also batted confidently. A cricket team from the Levin High School visited Wellington yesterday and played a match at the Basin Reserve against an eleven representing the Wellington Boys’ Cricket Association. The visitors batted first but. were all dismissed for a total of 25 by deadly bowling by E. Wright, who took seven wickets for 14 runs. . . Wellington, in their first innings, scored 176 for 'nine wickets and then applied the closure. Pike (38), Kelleher (26), Roberts (24). and Gunn (22) all hit freely. Brambley, who took four wickets for 52 runs, was the most effective bowler for Levin, who, in their second innings lost five wickets for 27. Sims taking three wickets for 16 and Roberts two for 4. The Levin High School team, which was in the charge of Mr. W. A. Canavan, returned home by train last evening.

WELLINGTON TEAM TO PLAY WANGANUI

The annual cricket match between Wellington College and Wanganui Collegiate School will be played on the Wellington College ground on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Both teams have strong/ elevens this year and some bright cricket should be seen. The following team has been selected to represent Wellington College:. J. D. Bedingfield (captain), C. B. Cornish, B.
