ELECTRICITY FOR MAKARA

Available On December 22

A new era is about to break upon Makara, which has been described as the Cinderella of Wellington's outlying suburbs and lies over the western ridge from Kitrori. Mr. M. Cable, manager of the electric light department of the AVellington City Corporation,’announced yesterday that electric current would be available to users at the “corner” (Church hall) in Makara on Thursday. December 22, which should be a red-letter day in the history of the district.

Actually, this district is beyond the boundaries of AVellington city. It is part of the Makara county, and is. therefore, in the lighting district of the Hutt A'alley Power Board. N That body, however, was not disposed to go to the expense of extending its system to such a sparsely-settled district when lhe prospect of any adequate return was so remote. The AVellington City Corporation, however, decided to take action and gained authority to extend its system to Makara and so give residents the benefit of electric light and power. The distance from the terminus of tlie city system in south Karori (via the Makara Hill) to the ‘'corner” is about two miles and u half over fairly rough country, but that is not the limit of tlie. extension planned.

At‘the ‘‘corner’’ roads branch off in two directions, one running four miles to Ohariu Bay and the other southeast a distance of some three miles to Makara South. Though the poles have been erected to Ohariu Buy and part of tlie way to Makara South, it is not proposed to supply current any further into the district than the “corner” on December 22. The extensions will be attended to early in the new year.

It is understood that the residents propose to Hold a gathering in tlie church hall on tlie evening of December 22 to celebrate the advent of electricity to tlie district.
