ROWING IN SCHOOLS
Suggested Detrimental ’ Effect On Health
“It is the worst thing a boy can take on,” said Mr. A. 13. Spencer at last night's meeting of the Hutt Valley High School Board of Governors when a letter was received from the Petone Rowing Club stating that it was disposing of two of its practice boats and offering one to the school. The club stated that the other boat was being- offered to the Hutt Memorial Technical College, Petone.
Mr. Spencer said he spoke with fcunie years’ experience as an oarsman. Mr. C. E. Dowland said he did manyyears’ rowing and had not known a man to strain his heart, in the long period he was associated with the sport. The chairman. Mr. D. A. Ewen, said that. Christ's College and Wanganui had school eights. Boys, however, did get “hearts" from rowing. The principal, iMr. J. N. Millard, said he had been asked by the club to receive ti deputation from it and would do so at a convenient time. He would not like the offer to be rejected without hearing what the deputation had to say. The question was left at this meantime.
