REQUEST TO SPARE SANDHILLS

•naaeranlwt* . Views Of Eastbourne Residents

When a letter was received by the Eastbourne Borough Council last night from several ratepayers (W- Perry, G. J. Jervis, E. Isaacs, G. A. Edmunds, E. Rockstrow, M. Isaacs, P. Jackson, E. M. Nelson, R, Isaacs) protesting against the , proposal of the council to "level the sandhills between our properties and the beach for the purpose of laying down tenuis courts, etc.,” it was pointed out that it was not the council’s intention to law down tennis courts in the region, which was its centenary scheme area. The writers stated that their objection was based on these grounds: (I) 'That the sandhills provided shelter from the wind and gave ideal sun-bathing facilities for all; (2) that it would be impossible to protect the tennis courts, etc., from drifting sand; (3) that the present sandhills provided an ideal playground for children ; (4) that their properties would be continually subjected to the drifting sand nuisance and would thereby depreciate in value. They added that they did not protest against the provision of any amenities on the flat space between the sandhills and

the road, but it would be fatal, both to the maintenance of those amenities and the preservation of their properties, to remove the sandhills.

It was decided to reply that the objections would be considered when the scheme was further advanced.
