SCOUT JAMBOREE

6000 In Camp At Heretaunga In 1940

There would be 6000 boys in the centennial scout jamboree camp at lleretaunga in 1940; this would be good business tor the borough, said Cr. AV. Greig at last night's meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council when suggesting that the finance committee receive Commissioners .1. E. F. Vogel at its next meeting. For the jamboree team, New Zealand Centennial Jamboree Office, Commissioner Vogel wrote thanking the finance committee for its £5 donation. The boy Scout Association did not usually seek assistance, but. the jamboree being .a special event of national importance, it was thought that those boroughs likely to benefit substantially might wish to assist in the preliminary organisation. In view of the very much larger grants which surrounding boroughs hail given his organisation would like to discuss the matter personally with the council’s finance committee. It was felt that there might be other ways in which the borough might be prepared to help, excluding financial help. Cr. J. Blewman said the £;> grant was an interim one; the jamboree was not until 1940. . , , i The council gave what it could afford, said Cr. C. A. Rendle. It had only £5O unauthorised revenue and was thus, when other calls on unauthorised expenditure were considered, in the unenviable position of not being able to give more.
