Basketball Dance At Waipukurau

An appreciable sum will be available for the expenses of a touring team as a result of a dance arranged by the Waipukurau Basketball 'Club and held in the Waipukurau Masonic Hall on 'Tuesday night. The dance was for the purpose of raising funds for sending a representative team on tour to Rotorua, and there was a gratifying attendance from all parts, of the district. despite stormy weather. Popular music was provided by an excellent orchestra, and Mr. S. Thomson and Mr. P. Smith acted as masters of ceremonies. Preliminary arrangements were carried out by the club’s secretary, Miss Joan McCarthy. Demonstrations were given during the evening, tlie modern quick-step by Miss D. Noble and Mr. L. Morton, and a solo tap by Ilinei Kuru.

Red Cross Committee

A large committee of those interested nt Red Cross aelivities met in the society’s rooms last night to discuss preliminary arrangements for a ball, which is to be the grand finale to their ■ .’inter season. The secretary, Mr. M. S. Galloway, was in Hie chair, and he apologised for the absence of the president. Dr. Alexander Gillies, who was out of Wellington. It was agreed to hold the ball in the St Francis Hall on Friday. September 30. Exactly what form it Will take has not yet been decided, but the ’possihilily of ineorpating cabaret items was discussed. The Important questions of orchestra and supper occupied the greater part of the meeting, and the question of costs was alto considered. It was decided to charge 10/0 for a double ticket and (>/- for :i single. Miss Betty Ttendle and Miss Lorna Ackroyd were appointed joint secretaries, and two sub-eonuuitlees were set up—one to go into tlie question of supper, consisting of Mrs. L. 11. Angus and Miss Dorothy Edward. • and the other, to deal with invitations, publicity, ami cutertainmenl. consisting of Messrs. 11. McDonald, V. E. Lamb, and G. S. Lloyd. A meeting will be held next Thursday to hear the reports of these subcommittees and to discuss further del ails. Mr. H. McDonald was elected chairman of fhe committee, of which the other members are Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Ivin, M"s. M. F. I'uliny, Mrs. I'. Campbell. Misses Peggy Bunny, Betty Sanderson, Joan Anderson. Nathalie Pollock. Ella Thomixson, Messrs. Derek Cochrane and T. A. Moucrieff.
