Inaugural Flight

An Air France machine has made an inaugural flight from Hanoi (Tongking) to Hong Kong, completing the remaining link in the direct service between Paris and Hong-Kong. The head of the Turkish Naval Mission, Captain Said Halman, has arrived in London in connection with the advance to be made by Britain to Turkey by way of a loan not exceeding in the aggregate £6,000,000 to enable Turkey to purchase in Britain material necessary for defence. An estate valued at £22,462 was left by Mr. C. F. Warren, Sidney, genera) manager in Australia and New Zealand of the Prudential Assurance Company, whose death occurred on May 31. The estate was bequeathed to his widow and son.

The condition of the British Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, who has been suffering from nasal catarrh, is understood to show some improvement.

Australian States’ Rights. The Australian Agents-General in London will meet on August 15 to consider insistence on recognition of State rights by Whitehall, which it is considered scarcely recognises them and deals exclusively with the Commonwealth Government. The British Board of Trade index of wholesale prices for July is at about the same level as for June, but shows a fall of nearly 10 per cent, from the previous year. The British Colonial Secretary, Mr. Malcolm Macdonald, has arrived in Lon don from Malta. Mr. MacDonald’s discussions when in Malta will be continued by the Governor-General, Sir Charles Bonham-Carter.
