Work For Women In Dominions

•JVHE Dowager Marchioness of Reading discussed the prospects for women emigrants in the Dominions at an informal reception given in London recently by the Society for the Oversea Settlement of British Women. Lady Reading is the only woman member of the Oversea Settlement Board. “If I were a young woman, I would go to Australia to-morrow,” she remarked. “There are great opportunities there.” What was needed on both sides, she added, was a new outlook on Empire migration. People ar home should realise that what the Dominions wanted were women with ‘tplastic minds, ready to adapt themselves to new conditions. This vear it. was expected that about 1000 women would go to the Dominions under the auspices of the Society for the Oversea Settlement of British Women. The society arranged for assisted passages, where available, and put migrants in touch with employers. The society could easily place about 2000 emigrants of the right type annually. They must have had some kind of training and be aged between 22 and 38.
