ENGINEER HONOURED

Mr. F. W. Mac Lean’s 80th Birthday

Some 50 chartered engineers attended a complimentary dinner to Mr. Francis William Mac Lean, formerly _chief engineer of the Railways Department and now retired, at the Hotel St. George on Monday evening. The occasion was Mr. Mac Lean’s eightieth birthday, and his fellow chartered engineers desired to honour one whose character and ability had made for him a position which be had filled with credit to himself and his department. The chair was occupied by Mr. James Marchbanks, formerly engineer to- the "Wellington Harbour Board, who proposed the health of the guest of the evening. In doing so he paid tribute to his worth as an engineer, a man, and a golfer. Mr. Mac Lean, in the course of his reply, spoke of his youth in Scotland, and of how he was almost a link with George Stephenson, maker of the famous locomotive “The Rocket,” for he ■was born only 10 years after Stephenson died. He thanked all who were present to do him honour on the occasion of his birthday.

A birthday cake was provided, with 80 candles.
