POUR POWERFUL SOVIET ICEBREAKERS.

The Soviet icebreaker Lazar Kaganovich. recently launched at the Marty Shipyards. Nikoliilev, Is the tlrst of four similar vessels, the largest of their kind in the world, under construction for the Northern Sea Route Administration. The others arc the Joseph Stalin, the Vyacheslav Molotov and the Otto Schmidt. The Joseph Stalin is nearing completion at the Orjonlkldze Shipyards, Leningrad. Each of the four has machinery of 10,000 hp. and a displacement of 11,000 tons. The vessels are fitted with the most up-to-date equipment, powerful radio stations, the latest navigation instruments and with facilities for carrying aircraft on Arctic work. The existing Icebreakers, as the experience of last year’s navigation has shown, are not .powerful enough to guarantee regular trallic along the whole of the northern sea route from the Atlantic to the Pacific, or to ensure Hie regular running of the growing shipping services to tile months of Siberian rivers. The Joseph Stalin and Lazar Kaganovich are scheduled to take part iu this year’s navigation in the Arctic.
