WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Reports of Meetings The following are reports of recent meetings of women’s institutes. Parewanui. Mrs. Bowen presided over a good attendance of members and visitors at the August, meeting of the Parewanui Women’s Institute, to whom she extended a warm welcome. “If your face wants to smile, let it; if it doesn’t, make it,” was the motto for the day. It was decided that a donation of £1 be sent to the North Wellington federation and 10/- to the Dominion federation.

The roll-call, “what would you like for a demonstration,” brought forth many good suggestions. This was followed by garden notes for the month, supplied by Mrs. Whitehead. The demonstration for September will be papier mache by Mrs. Huddleston, and the competition is embroidered flourbag apron. A bring-and-buy sale of plants will also be held. The results of competitions were as follows: —-Melting moments: Mrs. Whitehead, 1; Mjss H. Russell, 2; Mrs. Bowen, 3. Best bloom : Miss H. Russell.

Miss Grant gave a very interesting talk on institute matters, for which she received 1 a hearty vote of thanks. Arrangements were made for a flag ’506 and dance in aid of the country baby in the baby queen carnival. Upper Hutt.

At the August meeting of the Upper Hutt Women's Institute Mrs. Spencer presided over a good attendance of members.

Mrs. Lee gave an interesting address on the life and work of Mary Carpenter, a nineteenth-century philanthropist. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and presented with a sweets posy, the work of Mrs. Gorrie.. Mrs. Rogers read a report of a PanPacific address, given by Miss Andrews at Lower Hutt.

The committee was arranged to bold a social afternoon toward the end of the month, for the purpose of raising federation funds. The competitions for the month resulted as follows: Apple pie, Mrs. Spencer 1, Mrs. D’Ews 2;- best value for threepence, Mrs. D’Ews 1. Mrs. Braid 2; thrift article, Mrs. Spencer 1, Mrs. Braid 2. Afternoon tea was served by tlie hostesses, and an enjoyable meeting ended with the singing Of the National Anthem.
