EXPENDITURE ON GAS SERVICE

“Saving Must Be Made” WAN GAN UI COUNCIL LOR’S COMMENT Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, August 9. "Almost every report brought forward by the gas committee contains some item of expenditure, and these amount to a considerable sum,” said Cr. J. J. Scott, at a meeting of the Wanganui City Council to-night, referring to the report of the committee, which suggested the purchase of a water-softening plant, to cost about £l4O. Cr. Scott said the gas department was causing him grave concern, as what might be termed a competitor in the supplying of light and fuel had growing numbers of consumers. “The heavy expenditure has got to stop; we. cannot afford to reduce rates, and a saving, must be made through economies,” he said. Cr. G. E. Bennett, chairman of the. gas committee, said the expenditure provided for in the report was well merited and, as far as maintenance works were concerned, the amount was allowed for in the approved estimates.
