CLARION CALL’S TRIUMPH

Grand National Steeplechase Won After Fine Display Of Jumping

CATALOGUE’S SECOND WINTER CUP

Several Outsiders Score On First Day Of C.J.C. Meeting

Dominion Special Service.'

CHRISTCHURCH, August 9. ' On a heavy but drying track, and in overcast weather with a strong wind, the Grand National meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club opened at Riccarton to-day. • There was a large • attendance. Chief interest lay in the Grand National Steeplechase and the topweight, Clarion Call, proved that he possesses stamina as well as speed and jumping ability by beating a good field of cross-country performers, including a double winner of the event in Valpeen, and Royal Limond, who won in 1936. Valeen’s effort to win his third Grand National failed and he was beaten into third place by the lightweight, Bryce Street. Nothing had a chance with the winner over the final round. Catalogue, with 9.10, registered an impressive performance in carrying No. 1 saddle-cloth into first place in the Winter Cup, in which Dictate was the only defection, leaving 19 runners. Patiently ridden.in the early stages, Catalogue swooped down on the leading division in the straight and won going away from the littlefancied Waitaka with Alma close up in third place. Catalogue won this race last year. There were several surprise results in minor events and Top Rank paid a big price in the first event. Totalisator investments totalled £61,098/10/- compared with £65,185/10/- last year, a decrease of £4087. Because of yesterday’s storm interrupting telegraph and telephone communications, the details given below are incomplete in some particulars. Handicaps for the second day were not received.

Proceedings opened with a big surprise in the Trial Hurdles, for which Guilder was scratched. Mount Vai fell early and before the field had gone very far Top Rank assumed command and held his advantage to win, stalling off the challenge of Padishah, who jumped slowly at some fences. Innes's Lad, the favourite, was a poor third. Lone Raider was prominent for a good deal of the journey, but failed at the end. Topweight Wins. The topweight, Rebel Mate, scored well in the Paparua Handicap, with the second topweight, Top Row, second. Hunting Blood as usual showed brilliant speed early, but ’was caught in the straight, where Paper Note put iu some good work. Travenna Scores. The Jumpers’ Flat race saw another surprise. Travenna took the lead before the field had gone very far, and, opening up a gap, was never eaught, despite carrying topweight. ’Curie was prominent throughout and was in second place approaching the straight, but did not stay on, Fireguard finishing well for second with Paiigo in third place. Caslunere Plate. The Cashmere Plate saw’ a keen finish. In the leading division were Gay Parade, Rex Maitland, Keen Sight and VVild Talk, with Rebellion not so well placed. Rebellion finished well, however, and beat all but Wild Talk. The Grand Naitonal. Leading for the last mile and a half and giving a splendid exhibition of jumping, Clarion Call won the Grand National Steeplechase, repeating his success in the Homeby Steeplechase a fortnight earlier and settling doubts as to whether he would see the long journey out.

Brigadier was scratched.. The field went away to a good start, with Valpeen dwelling a little, and High Speed, Erinatioji and Royal Banquet piloted the field to the first fence, where Irish Comet was Last. Royal Banquet took command and showed the way to Erination, Santoft, Bryce Street- and Valpeen, with Clarion Call about seventh, but crossing the top Erination took charge. At Cutts’s he was two or three lengths clear of Royal Banquet, who was ■ followed by Valpeen, Bryce Street an_d Santoft and Clarion Call. This fence saw the end of Forest Glow’s chance, as he fell. Royal Limond and Irish Comet were the last ones over it. Erination was going freely and opened up a good lead, but at the first of the Kennels double he baulked and threw his* rider, and Clarion Call, who had made up ground well, jumped into the lead, followed by Royal Banquet and Valpeen together. Bryce Street, and then Santoft, three or four lengths back. High Speed went out at the first of. the stand double, and at the post and rails Clarion Call was three lengths ahead of Bryce Street and Valpeen, who were followed by Santoft and Royal Banquet. Approaching the straight for the last time the leader drew well clear, but Bryce Street, hard-ridden, set out to elose the gap. Clarion Call was put carefully at the last fence and cleared it splendidly ahead of Bryce Street and Valpeen. Bryce Street strove desperately to overhaul the leader, but Clarion Call passed the post two lengths to the good, with Valpeen third, then a big break to Irish Comet and Santoft. Ridden confidently and well, .Clarion Call gave a great display of jumping. Bryce Street had every ehance, and Valpeen kept gping gamely. Second Cup Success.

Monipere gave trouble at the start and was eventually placed at the outside of the field. Silver Slipper was turned round at the etart and took no part in the race. The other runners got away to a good start, Mittie and Great Hope being smartest to begin. Inside the first furlong Great Hope was just showing the way to a bunch including Mittie, Alma. Paper. Slipper and Waitaka. Cocksure made a forward move and Ponty also improved his position, with Catalogue still in the ruck. Great Hope and Waitaka were fighting it out into the straight, where Paper Slipper momentarily showed up on the inner. Catalogue swooped down on the leading division and won narrowly from Waitaka, who held on long enough to beat the fast-finishing Alma. Details Of The Racing By 'i'clparnpli Press Association.
