RIDDIFORD FAMILY

Association With New Zealand Since 1826

The Riddiford family had been associated with New Zealand as far back as 1826, when Air. Daniel Riddiford was first emigration agent, said Air. AV. Toomath in a talk to a public meeting at Lower Hutt last night on early history. Air. Daniel Riddiford was followed fcy his son, Air. E. J. Riddiford, known as ‘'King" Riddiford, said Air. Toomath. He recalled an incident when Air. Riddiford was walking along Aloleeworth Street with his mother to church. Airs. Riddiford expressed admiration for a pair of horses that passed, but said she would like them better with gold-mounted harness. Airs. Riddiford went to church and when she came out-there was the pair of horses with gold-mounted harness. “King” Riddiford's devotion to his mother was an outstanding object lesson to New Zealanders. It was said that his love for her was so great that she feared to express any wish because whatever it was he would gratify it.
