A message received from Jerusalem yesterday stated that there was acute tension throughout the whole of Palestine as a result of a bomb explosion In the crowded municipal market at Haifa, when 18 Arabs and three Jews were killed and 38 others seriously injured. Panic reigned after the explosion and the police opened fire, causing further fatalities.
It was the worst single outrage since the present Arab-Jewish tension began, and the tragic death-roll raised the bitterness and animosity existing between Arabs and Jews to fever pitch. Haifa’s main street resembled a ghastly shambles. Dead, dying and injured were lying among the wreckage of cars and market stalls. Jews and Arabs violently blamed each other for causing the shooting.
