BRITISH OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Tolley Has Brilliant Round

BAD PLAY PUTS COTTON FAR BEHIND

By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. LONDON, July 7. The second round of the British open golf championship was played to-day. The weather was overcast, with a strong wind against which most of the holes had to be played. The best round of the day was C. J. Tolley's 68, which equals the amateur record for the course. Royal St. George’s, on which the play is taking place, is at present 6728 yards in length.

The following 37 qualified for the final two rounds, which will be played to-morrow: —

Scores of 149 and over failed to qualify. All the Australians were eliminated. Hattersley was the best of them with an aggregate of 150. The failure of Bruen, of Ireland, was the result of 80 to-day for a total of 150.

Sharing twenty-fifth place witli five others, Cotton’s chance of retaining the championship is very remote. He admits that he played badly and is too far behind to catch the leaders.
