A Song About Spring
T)EAR Boys and Girls, Can you really believe it is July? As I write, the sky is palely blue, with wisps of cloud puffing across the horizon in a flurry. There is mellow yellow sunshine about the city, and the harbour gleams silver-altogether a day right out of place in blustery July. What a quaint mixture there is in the seasons just now. Mailbag is crammed with weather news,' some members write
with fingers numbed with frost, and others of snowstorms: then a piece of sunshiny news pops brightly out of its envelope, with a spring verse or talk of fragrant spring flowers for company Sometimes I envy the Leaguers who have fun on the snowfields, but 1 think, after all. that these early signs of spring are best. In all thi little gardens there are fresh green shoots and one or two adventuring bulbs budding
hopefully. The florists’ shops are spilling white and golden jonquils on to the street, and a sudden breath of violets comes to you as you pass. In my very own garden the other day I discovered the first freesia. It was hiding in the fallen petals of a white camelia, and if I had not detected its fragrance I would not have noticed it. But there it was, shy, softly streaked with mauve, and looking not too sure of its surroundings. And because the sunshine has been filtering down through the leaves upon it, ever since it unfurled its tight bud, I feel sure that William Weatherman has ordered the days especially to 'make mv freesia feel at home. In the camel'ia bush two little birds carol gaily each morning, and I am reminded of that old, old verse beginning—- “ Spring is coming.’’ Do Is you know it? '
