How Europe Contributes

The “New York Times” . has compiled the following particulars concerning the number of aliens living in Latin America. ■’ ' 7

Argentina : At least 35 per cent, of 13,000,000 population of Italian lineage, but most have dropped Italian citizenship ami allegiance. Japanese, Germans, British and Americans have small colonies.

Bolivia: White races form 12 per cent, of a population estimated at 2,500,000, mostly Indians. About 6000 Chinese, negroes, etc. Growing colony of Japanese. Small German and Italian colonies.

Brazil: Total population about 47,000,000. Germany estimates 800,000 Germans in Brazil. This must include racial Germans, for estimates in Brazil give about 500,000 as Germans. Located in south, especially States of Santa Catherine and Rio Grande do Sul, and around Sao Paulo. Italians nearly 1,000,000. Some estimates run to 2,000.000. Portuguese —about 500,000. Japanese—about 260,000, mostly near Sao Paulo, few in Amazon region. Syrians 1000 or more. Many others from Near Chile: Total population about 4,500,000 Manv Germans, but largely merged in Chilean culture. Possibly 200.000 all told, concentrated in south. British —about 7000. Colombia: Population, 8, <OO,OOO. Small colonies of Syrians, Italians, Germans, British Americans, totalling about ‘-10,000. Costa Rica: Population, 590.000. Influential German colony of 2000 or more. „ Cuba: Population, 4,100,000. Americans, Europeans, Chinese, etc., total about 260,000. Dominican Republic: Population, 1,500,000. Syrians and other small foreign colonies. Eucador: Population, 2,700.000. About 200,000 pure Europeans, rest mixed or Indians. Germans—-about 5500. about 600. Italians— colony of 1000, with strong influence on Government. Guatemala: Population, 2,400,000. Germans—2ls6 with German passports, included in 6000, most of whom came from 1890 to 1900. British--2449, including many negro Jamaicans on banana plantations. Americans 1500; Italians, 537 ; Japanese. 13. Haiti: Population, 3,000,000. Foreign colony totals only 3000. Honduras: Population. 1,000,000. British—about 3000, mostly negro fruit workers. Other foreign colonies small Mexico: Population: 10,000.000. Foreigners, about 150,000. Many Americans have left. Other foreign colonies fairly evenly divided. Japanese. 5000. Nicaragua: Population, '750,000. Immigration severely restricted since 1930. Foreign colonies relatively small. Republic of Panama (not including the Canal Zone): Population, 500,000. German, Italian, and Japanese colonies small but influential. Paraguay: Population, 926,000. Foreigners, about 50,000, mostly Argentines. Recent immigration of Germans, Poles, Russians, and Czechs. Peru : Population, 6,500,000. Japanese, 45,000: Chinese, 7000; Italians, 5800; English, 2250; Germans, 2300; Americans, 1250..
