STUD STOCK EXPORT

Feeding The Market The export market for New Zealand stud sheep is widening every year. Recently a consignment has been sent even so far away as Southern Rhodesia. A stud stock expert states that the growth of this trade has been greatly aided by the foresight displayed by some breeders. He mentioned one Manawatu breeder who supplied a large consignment of sheep at 2gns. a head, which he could have sold locally at sgns. This farmer was co-operating readily with the firm in question to promote trade on a new overseas market. Some breeders, it was said, do not see the point, but to those who do, the exporters are most grateful. They are willing to face early losses on developing new markets,-but do feel that breeders might aid them. , . , , Instances were given of the develoijinent of Corriedale export to South America, many years ago. Breeders who stood by that enterprise have been richly rewarded, even though it took Some years to gain recognition Of the merits of the breed in a foreign land. To-day, New Zealand Lincolns, Corriedales and Romneys are in demand in South America. .... Romneys are going to South Africa now, and hopes of a useful trade there are entertained. The export of 300 stud Southdowns to West Australia is a feature of recent exports. These are going largely to found new studs to supply the rapidly developing fat lamb industry in the southwest of that State, about Albany. This Dominion is now the world's leading exporter of stud sheep and the trade shows every prospect of further' and extensive development.
