Modern Undies May Be Tailored Or Feminine

Soft lawn is much in favour for undies. It comes out so freshly from the wash and is cooler for hot days than silk. It looks well trimmed with Irish lace.

Nightdresses are particularly pretty, and I have noticed that in the shops there are many more nightdresses than pyjamas to be seen now. They are usually cut on the cross with a cross-over bodice and touch the ground. Some are demure with puffed sleeves and the same folded necklines and gathered fronts which we are wearing on our dresses. They are often trimmed with exquisite hemstitching or appliqued embroidered net. Others are sleeveless and nearly backless. They tie at the shoulder in tiny bows or are held up by large posies or huge bows of taffeta ribbon. V neckline and bunchy shoulders are kind to the most difficult figures. Tailored Pyjamas.

PYJAMAS, where they appear at all, A do not follow this feminine trend. They are usually of satin and well tailored, often with tunic-coats, smartly double-breasted. You cau have them in contrasting shades —dark blue' with petunia-coloured lapels and sash, green with bright blue buttons and pockets. , zk friend of mine always has two sets of night clothes—fluffy and tailored. She has a practical close-fitting dress-ing-gown, reaching almost to her ankles, with large patch-pockets “to keep my hands warm in cold corridors,” she says. One dressing-gown she has is of' satin, quilted at the sleeves and shoulders so that it is warm without being bulky. It has a quilted scarf to match.

To match this severe dressing-gown she has smartly-cut pyjamas, with either short, straight sleeves or long ones. She always insists on having the trousers as long as possible. “They hide my red heels after my bath,” she declares.

She usually wears these more severe night clothes in the winter or if she wants to relax in the evening and sit at home in comfort. Incidentally, she likes her dressing-gown to button down well below the knees. She has suffered like all of us from draughts when the front falls open. She has frilly nightgowns with as much lace and ribbon as she can get on them. To go with these she has a neglige which would be the envy of a film star. It is of soft silk and silk-lined and trails on the ground. The bodice is fitted but the skirt is several yards wide and a frill of soft lace falls round the edge. “It looks so nice spread out on my bed when I go to stay with people,” she remarked. She says it is fun catering to your moods at night as well as in the day-time.
