Hymns Which Helped Punters
YO hymn before No. 37 is ever sung ' at the Monte Carlo Church. Why? Because some years ago an English peer, who had been to the morning service, strolled into the Casino and won several hundred pounds. He backed the No. 32, which was that of the last hymn sung in church. He related this experience to his friends, and the following Sunday the church was crowded. The announcement of the last hymn was awaited with great interest, and immediately its number was heard there was a rush for the door, and to the Casino. Strangely enough, the “system” again succeeded.
The chaplain was annoyed at the unseemly behaviour, particularly when he heard the reason, and, fearing a recurrence of such a scandalous scene in church, he made it a fixed rule that hymns Nos. 1 to 36 should henceforth never be sung.
Needless to say, 36 is the highest number at the Casino.
The smell of new paint is unpleasant to many. A handful Of hay in a pail of water, placed in a newlypainted room, will remove the odour.
