Japan’s Fear Of Russia
Sir —Two' able correspondents, “N. Gould” and "J.A.McF.,” have summed up the position in a clear-cut manner. Ihe statement made by Mr. Kuehi Gunji is ot a similar nature to those made, by other Japanese spokesmen, "... Chinese people, as long as they are treated kindly, it is all the same to them. . . Evidently our mentality io considered to be of a low order if we are to swallow such statements. _ Lushov was probably a Japanese spy. They have found Japanese spies m the loyalist air force in Spain, as any .readers of F. G. Tinker’s amazing stories in the American “Saturday Evening Poet will have learnt. It is the Chinese who have saved us from Japanese domination in the Pacific, and the longer the Chinese can hold the Japanese, the greater period of time before we are menaced. China has appealed time and time again to the League of Nations, and had Russia not assisted her (to what extent we do not know), she would have crumpled under the military machines of Japan. This Communistic bug the Japanese talk about is pure bunkum, and, even were it not s-o, which is preferable to «. per cent, of the people? To be squeezed and ground by the big five of Japan who own, control and guide the destinies or Japan, both civil and military, . beside whom Rothschilds. Krupps, Rockefellers, Leverhulmes are mere bagatelles, or to be under so-called Communist rule? I ask "Pacifist” which he would prefer. Having been in the countries concerned my knowledge is not altogether from hearsay. Russia ha« do ambitions to secure more territory. She is a bad coloniser and is also a shocking propagandist. I cannot believe she will ever vo to war against Japan. Her military preparations are defensive measures against Japan, as before her eyes she sees the vast countryside of China in-raded.-I am. etc., DEF E NDE R . Wellington, July 8.
