HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

ELECTION FOR OFFICE

Cr. 8. Blackley was elected chairman of the Hutt County Council al its annual meeting yesterday, defeating Cr. !•’. W. Vickennan in an election for the position. Cr. Blackley was nominated by Cr. It. L. Button and seconded by Cr. W. IL M. Pearce. Cr. !■’. Bradey nominated Cr. Viekerman, and Lr. ,1. I> Yaldwyn seconded. All councillors except Cr. .1. J. Maker were present. Congratulating the new chairman. Cr. Viekerman said he bad let his name be ptlt forward only because he did not believe seniority should give a councillor a prerogative in election to the chair. Responding, the chairman agreed with Cr. Viekerman. He remarked that the defeat of Cr. D. IL Hoggard, the previous chairman, as representative of XVainui-o-mata riding, had left him as the only remaining member or the council of 1925. He felt bis long experience would be of assistance to the council and the ratepayers. The chairman referred in warm terms to his predecessor. Mr. Hoggard's work for the ratepayers had not been recognised by them, but councillors knew how much be bad done. He welcomed the new member, Cr. Yaldwyn, expressing the hope that he would Sic at the table a long time and give the council the benefit of his advice, and assuring hint of the council's support in any problem that might arise. The chairman was voted £l9O in lieu of travelling expenses for the ensuing year.

The following representatives of the council on other bodies were appointed —N.Z. Free Ambulance Transport Service, Cr. Button; Wellington City and Suburban Highways Board, Cr. Yaldwyn; Wellington City and Suburban Water Board, Cr. Maher: Counties’ Association, the chairman; District Highways Council, Cr. Viekerman. The whole council was: appointed to the finance and administrative committee.

It was decided that the council should meet on the third Wednesday of the month at. 3 p.m., and the finance committee on the second Wednesday at 3 p.m.
