HARD WRESTLING

Fraley Beats Yourist By Single Fall FLYING TOEHOLD PROVES EFFECTIVE In a strenuous wrestling bout, al times rough and interrupted by continual outbreaks of fisticuffs, I’.it Fraley beat Abe Yourist bv a single fall at the Town Hall. Wellington, last night. A large crowd watched the contest. 1: raley. who was repeatedly warned by .In referee, Mr. All. Jenkins, for rough tactics, took a tall in the fifth round with a Hying toe-hold, to which Yourist. at mice submitted. Ihe bout, on the whole, was the most, scientific seen at Wellington this season. Fraley nt 10.3 was a pound the heavier, stocky and well-muscled. Yourist, who entered the ring in blue velvet trunks and dressing-gown emblazoned with a Hebrew hieroglyph, was larger and leaner. As soon as the two came to grips Fraley hit Yourist a tap cn the nose: Yourist took the precaution of spitting out his chewing gum. He was wise; I'raley promptly landed him a rabbit punch on tbe back of the neck, staggering him. Yourist grinned gleefully when he retaliated in similar fashion. He did not. appear so pleased, however, when 1' raley broke a headlock by twisting his ear and then balched him off his feet into the ropes with a forearm swing. Fraley had the best, of the early rounds. Making free use of his forearm and showing a wide mat repertoire, lie worried Yourist with repeated hair-pulling, faceslapping and light, stinging jolts to the faee. A trickle of blood stained Yourist s cheek. Fraley took him in a four-finger hold and pulled him to the mat, at. the same time planting both feet in his stomach so that he was thrown head over heels. ' Yourist, however, applied an excruciating arm-bar. He stood grinning when Fraley protested at his breaking a hold bv jabbing his thumbs behind Fraley s ears'. The referee, however, declined to interfere. ' . x , ■ In the’ fourth round Yourist (Hove Fraley from the ring with a fusillade of jolts. He reached over the ropes and slammed Fraley back. Fraley bolted, but Yourist again slammed him back. Fraley went into an nrm-.bar. but Yourist butted him in the faee, opening up his forehead and leaving him dazed. Yourist battered him into a coma with jolts. He met drop-kick with drop-kick, and knocked Fralev headlong with a flying tackle. Fraley, his face bleeding and battered, knelt‘on the mat breathing heavily. He appeared spent. But when Yourist launched a second headlong tackle I ra].:v mustered an unexpected reserve of energy and dodged? as Yourist, hurtled by Fraley lassoed him in a flying toehold, beautifully executed. Yourist was wise; lie submitted instantly, before Fraley could bounce on his pinioned leg. Fraley opened the sixth round _ by dumping Yourist; lie took Yourist in. a crotch hold to do it again but Yourist acted fast and it was Fraley who was dumped. A moment later the referee stopped the bout to remark that the match was supposed to be wrestling, not boxing. “What do you say? It’s up to .you?” demanded the referee, when Fraley lay groaning in a short-arm scissors. But the bell interrupted. Fralev crawled out of the ring on all fours after Yourist had sent home a flying tackle. Fraley was warned again for fisticuffs, when ho had knocked Yourist down, first with a blow to the jaw, then with one to the solar plexus. Fraley, to start a vigorous eighth round, picked Yourist up on his shoulders, as for an aeroplane spin, and made to hurl him into the crowd. The referee thwarted him. Yourist tumbled Fraley heavily with five successive flying tackVs, catapulting himself off the ropes. The referee again stopped the bout to protest against further prize-fight ,tactics. Fralev again attempted a flying toehold when Yourist sought to finish him with punishing halchos; but Yourist gained the safety of the ropes. Fraley mot a tackle with n drop-kick that Hattoned Yourist. but Fraley could not press him. The bell terminated the contest and the two mat-men shook hands in friendly manner. Amateur Preliminaries.
