DRUNKENNESS & THEFT

Two Men Plead Guilty Two cases of theft resulting from drunkenness were heard before Mr. H. P. Lawry, SAL. in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday. Sub-Inspector A. D. McLean prosecuted. Frederick Miles, butcher, aged 43, pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness and theft. It. was stated by the police that Miles had broken a showcase containing women’s evening handbags, and when he discovered the damage he took four of them. He had them in his possession when he was arrested. Mr. Acß. Sievwright, who appeared for Miles, said his client .was a respectable citizen in normal circumstances, but that he had lately been troubled over domestic matters, and had been more or less in a state of intoxication for a week. Accused was fitted £1 for drunkenness, and convicted on the charge of theft and ordered to come tip for sentence within one month. Au order for restoration of the bags, and restitution of the damage to the show case was made. 'Theft From Fish .Shop. Thomas King, labourer, aged 56. pleaded guilty to charges of theft and drnnkennes.«. He said that he did not remember anything about the theft, hut the prosecution stated that he took a handful of silver from a till in a fish shop. When he was arrested ns a result of n complaint made by tin- proprietor, Con Palmpas. King denied the theft. - hut a search at the police station revealed that he had 7/6 in silver consisting of threepences and sixpences. He was fined £1 and costs for each offence.
