MOTOR CAMP SITES

City Council Discussion

Tlie great need for the provision of motor camps in Wellington, particularly in view of the numbers of motorists expected here for the Centennial Exhibition, was emphasised by councillors at last night's meeting of the city council, when a visit to a site in Rus-, sell Terrace considered to be a possible .motor camp site was being arranged by the reserves committee. Cr. L. McKenzie objected to the proposal that that area should be used as a motor camp. It should be used for sports grounds. He suggested a site at Scorching Bay for a motor camp. “We have got to find areas to enable the people to camp by the thousand in Wellington city during the centennial,” said Cr. R. MeKeen, M.P. Part of the Russell Terrace area could be used as a camping ground, and part as a sports ground, he said. He doubted whether the council could provide very much facility’ for campers at the area at Scorching Bay mentioned. At the present there was not another area in the city which provided the space which Russell Terrace did. The mayor. Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said if the council could get more than this area in Russell Terrace, then all the better. The exhibition board was going into the various questions in that connection. The problem of accommodation was very big, but the board was by no means idle. Mr. Hislop said lie thought the council should look at the sl'e suggested. It could also get details of the Scorching Bay site, and any others suggested, and come to a decision. The mayor’s suggestion was adopted.
