Encouraging Faimlies

Sir,—-The. special citizens’ committee set up to consider questions’ relative to the tremendous population loss through illegal operations, has produced some valuable recommendations.

The report urges that families should be encouraged by allowing a larger deduction of inconjs tax, a very practical way in which the present Government could show its sympathy.... The Government Railways could very well allow children of school .age to travel for halffare; It is ridiculous that children over 12 years of age have to pay full fare. Here again is another practical way in which the Government can show its sympathy. We will await a decision with much interest.

The same applies to fares on tramways and ferry steamers, including the steamer express.- The management of picture theatres can give a bold lead by allowing all primary and high school children to attend their theatres for half-price. If this were done, other bodies might follow willingly. If the picture companies do not care to take tiie first step, then we should look to-the Government to make an early pronouncement on the subject. If no step is taken by the Government, then we should hear less about sympathy for the family man, for practical help is the ionly' test of sincerity. . ... An announcement by the Minister of Railways would be most welcome, as would some indication from those controlling entertainments,- whether pictures or concerts or sports gatherings. I understand the Rugby authorities in some districts do allow school children, primary or high school, admittance to their grounds for half-price.—l am, etc., ' FAMILY MAN. Wellington, April 1.
