TAXI CAB FARES

Charges Fixed By City Council BY-LAW AMENDMENT Tlie maximum and minimum fares payable for the hire of a licensed passenger vehicle (other than a passengerservice vehicle as defined by the Transport Licensing Act, 1931) were fixed as follows in the Wellington City Com solidated By-law Amendment, No. 17 (Licensed Passenger Vehicles), 1938, confirmed by the City Council last night:—

For a distance not exceeding one half-mile for one or two pasgers For every additional half-mile ... 6d. For every additional passenger over two for the whole or part, of the journey an extra charge of . 6d.

Under the order a child under five years of age is not to be counted as a passenger provided it is accompanied by an adult, but a child unaccompanied shall be charged full fare. Waiting time shall be charged for at the rate of 6d. for every complete five minutes. . Where any luggage of the hirer is carried on a luggage carrier affixed to the vehicle an additional fee of 6d. shall be charged for the journey. The charge for the hire of a vehicle required to travel beyond a point 10 miles distant by road from the General Post Office is to be such charge as is agreed upon between the' owner or driver of the vehicle and the hirer. It is declared to be an offence for the owner or driver of any licensed passenger vehicle to demand or accept a greater or less fare than that shown on the taxi-meter at the termination of the hiring increased by all extra charges allowable.
