NEW APPOINTMENT MADE

Victoria University College PROFESSOR T. A. HUNTER TO BE PRINCIPAL

At a meeting of the Council of Victoria University College on Thursday night, Professor T. A. Hunter was appointed principal of the college, a new-ly-created office, the precise significance of which has not yet been announced. It is presumed, however, that it will correspond in the main with the office of rector at Canterbury College, and will entail the direction of the academic activities of the college. With the appointment of a principal, tlie position of chairman of the professorial board, held last year by Professor F. F. Miles, automatically lapses. The new appointment is a permanent one, that of chairman having been subject to election from time to. time.

Professor Hunter holds the chair of Mental and Moral Philosophy at the college, where he has been a lecturer since 1904. , A Londoner by birth, he was educated in New Zealand, at the. Port Chalmers High School and then at the University of Otago, where he took the degree of M.A. with first-class honours in mental science in 1899, and M.Sc. in 1904. He was first chairman of the Victoria College Professorial Board in 1911, has been chairman several times since, and has been on the college council since 1920. Professor Hunter is also vice-chancellor of the University of New Zealand and chairman of the New Zealand Council of Educational Research.
