MOUNTAINEER TURNS AUTHOR

Book On Southern Alps To Be Published Well known among New Zealand mountaineers as perhaps the foremost authority on the Southern Alps, Mr. John I’ascoe. Wellington, has received a cablegram from London to say that his book on alpine exploration in the Smith Island has been accepted for early publication by Messrs. George Allen and Unwin.

.Mr. Pascoe is at present carrying out research work at the General Assembly Library for the New Zealand Historical Committee, in preparation for the centenary. He is a vice-president of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, a member of the Alpine Club. Jxmdon. and a fellow of tlie Royal Geographical Society. He has climbed extensively throughout the Canterbury and West*land mountains.

The title of the book is, tentatively, “Ice-Axe.” It will be prefaced by a foreword written by Mr. H. E. L. Porter. famous English mountaineer. It contains not only accounts of climbs, but also a great deal of the history and description of the ranges. It will be profusely illustrated with photographs taken by the author, some of them in colour, maps, and sketches by bls brother, Mr. Paul Pascoe, architect, Christchurch.
