AWAPUNI GOLD CUP TO STRETTO

Brilliant Performance

TIME VERY CLOSE TO DOMINION RECORD First Day’s Results At Manawatu Meeting . By Telegraph.—Prom The Watcher. Palmerston North, March 25. Brilliant weather favoured the opening of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Awapuni to-day. Keen and interesting racing was witnessed, and very fast times were recorded. Catalogue established a fresh track record when he won the King George Handicap, but it did not last very long, being beaten two races later by Stretto in the Awapuni Gold Cup. Stretto scored a brillian and popular victory. The open sprint was won by Race Can. Four favourites ■ won races, and three jockeys—L. J. Ellis, P. Atkins, and C. G. Goulsbro —each rode two winners. The track was hard and fast, and there was a good attendance for an off day. The totalisator investments were £2O-479, an increase of £2700/10/- on the corresponding day last year. . Inquiries into interference with Cx>nversion in the Woodhey Hack Handicap and into the bumpings that occurred in the last race resulted in no rider being found at fault. Stamina Tells. Superior stamina won the hurdles for Count Willonyx. He made most of the pace, being supplanted once or twice by Iddo, and this pair were joined over the last five furlongs by Hirangi. Hirangi was a shade in front at the last fence and looked like winning, but Count'Willonyx, sticking to the rails, wore him down again. Iddo was a good third, with Royal Limond fourth and Kentucky Song next. Sunee fell at the last fence after having been well in the rear throughout. Hirangi had every chance. The unlucky runner was Iddo, who was outside the leading pair all the way for the last five furlongs. Cletrac ran only a moderate race. Royal Limond, who looked big in condition, put up a very creditable showing, falling back only in the concluding stages. Comfortable Win. Only a handful of the big field in the Autumn Plate had any chance from the outset, most of them failing to begin well. Golden Pam made all the pace from Gay Hunting, Haile Selassie, Scarf Dance, and Fafner, and at the end of two furlongs this lot was well clear of the rest. Golden Pam led into the straight, but Haile Selassie then drew, out and went on for a comfortable win. liatner was unable to reach Golden Pam, with Gaj' Hunting, Scarf Dance, Autosweep, and Puroto next. . The winner has occasionally shown flashes of form, and his win was overdue. The favourite, Scarf Dance, had every chance. Phalanx Narrowly. Phalanx, having his first race since the spring, scored a narrow but solid win the hack sprint. , Phalanx began well and lay handy 10 the leader, Short Circuit, others prominent being Majority, Conversmu, Sigurd, Dancing Flame, Gay Molly and Ambition. Phalanx headed off Short Circuit entering the straight, hotly pursued by Sigurd, with Dancing Flame and Majority still handy and Ramleh moving up. Phalanx stayed on best and won narrowly from Sigurd, with Short Circuit, Ramleh, Gay Molly, Majority, Vudanoe, and Dancing Flame all handy. The winner, who is owned and trained at Christchurch, won a couple of races at Rangiora and Banks Peninsula m the spring, but he failed at the New Zealand Cup meeting and had not scored since. Sigurd ran a fine race as he drew No. 15. Ramleh finished well from a good way back. Conversion met trouble on the home turn. Catalogue’s Superiority.

Catalogue fairly bolted in at the finish of the King George Handicap. Lucullus Lad made the running and

set a very fast pace from Francis Drake, P.oaming, Master Cyklon, and Catalogue. With five furlongs to go Lucullus Lad had gone out four or five lengths clear, but on the turn they were gathering him in and Francis Drake headed him into the straight, with Catalogue coming fast and the others beaten. Catalogue continued his run and went on to win very decisively. Lucullus Lad weakened at the finish, and Francis Drake was a clear second. Arctic King was fourth and then came the bunch, headed by Good Sun and Hunting Cat, with Roaming last. The time was a track record, and, although nothing had any chance with the winner, Francis Drake, ridden in behind, ran on a lot better. Two-year-old Race. The well-backed division in the two-year-old race ran true to form. Rakahanga and Ivar began smartly and led from Russian Ballet and Rehearsal. Richelieu Pearl went with the latter pair to the turn and then retired. Rakahanga drew out slightly entering the straight, and, although Ivar challenged hotly, he could not get up. Russian Ballet and Rehearsal hung out <badly on the turn, but ran on for the next two places, followed by Dunmanway and Wynardo. Stretto’s Fine Performance. Stretto proved her class in the Awapuni Gold Cup with a splendid victory. Oratory set a fast pace and was attended by Stretto and Smoke Screen, with Icing handy, and Royal Chief, who moved short, four or five lengths in the Tear. There was no change in the order once they settled down, but Stretto was pulling hard early and Smoke Screen had a slight advantage over her down the back. About five furlongs from home Royal Chief began to move up, and on the turn he hud run up to the bunch, while Smoke Screen was being ridden to hold his place. Oratory led. into the straight, but Stretto then came through and, going on, she won brilliantly by three-qua_rters of a length from Royal Chief, who continued his solid run. Icing was third, with Oratory fourth and Smoke Screen last. Stretto won in time which broke the track record again and i 9 only l-ssec. outside Bronze Eagle’s New Zealand record. Royal Chief raced like a good horse. He was very sore and the way in which he made up six or seven lengths on the winner over the last five furlongs with re-cord-breaking pace on stamped him as a really genuine horse. Smoke Screen was beaten at a mile. Good Finishing Run. Race Call, coming from four or five places back, won well in the J. M. Johnston Memorial Handicap. Dancing Lady and Alunga got left through .tangling their gear at the start, and Great Hope made the pace, with Notium, Debham, Old Surrey and Race Call next. Notium headed off Great Hope soon after entering the straight, but was unable to withstand the run of Race Call, who won decisively. Great Hope held on for third, with Debham fourth, then Cleseamor, Old Surrey and Wildflower. Debham had every chance. Galteemore Wins Well. Patiently handled by L. J. Ellis, Galteemore maintained his recent improvement and won decisively in the concluding event. He was several places back in most of the running, but he moved up handy to the leaders, Royal Choice, Warehi and Earl Colossui, approaching the straight, where Nereus was also handy. Galteemore soon shot clear and had the race Won a long way from home. Nereus ran a little better than Earl Colossus and Royal Choice, who were followed by Warehi, Student Prince and Copy Cat. There was a lot of bumping going out of the straight, and the chances of Lovelilt, Amatory, Windscreen, and Thalfl were extinguished when they were pushed right off the course. Galteemore is greatly benefited by his recent spell and should go on to more successes. Student Prince was a good way back in the running, and another who,.was well back, early and finished in the picture was Copy Cat. . Details Of The Racing KARERE HURDLES, of £2OO.
