EXPRESS STRIKES CAR
Level-Crossing Accident WOMAN INJURED Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 25. To be thrown aside unhurt while the car from which he was trying to extricate his wife was struck by the engine of the north-bound Auckland express at the West Street level crossing was the experience of Mr. W. D. Campbell, Longburn, .about 5.37 p.m. to-night. His wife was removed to the public hospital with a suspected fracture of a leg, bruises, and shock. Mr. Campbell was driving from Palmerston North to Longburn and was approaching the crossing when he saw the engine about 40 yards away, but was unable to stop the car before the front wheels had encroached on the first rail. He was endeavouring frantically to pull his wife from the front seat when he was swept aside as the engine struck the car, damaging it extensively and hurling it on to the cattle-stops. The train was travelling at only about 12 miles an hour and stopped immediately, but was able to proceed after a delay of about five minutes.
