Bookmaker On Large Scale
A fine of £lOO, in default three months’ imprisonment, on a charge of using premises at 21 Frederick Street as a common gaming house was imposed on Percy Leonard Richards, aged 31, sash and chair manufacturer, in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday. Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., was on the bench.
Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle said a search warrant was executed at Richards's premises yesterday morning by Detective-Sergeant W. McLennan and Detective Brown. A large quantity of betting material showed that he operated on a fairly extensive scale and over a considerable period, the bets including 68 doubles on the Manawatu race meeting.
Richards, who pleaded guilty, told the magistrate tbqt he laid bets only on commission as agent for another bookmaker.
