NINETY-FOUR TO-DAY

Mr. E. Cutler, Newtown

SIXTY YEARS RESIDENCE IN WELLINGTON

Mr. Edward T. Cutler, of 10 Normanby Street, Newtown, who has lived in Wellington for 60 years, celebrates his ninety-fourth birthday to-day. Ills wife is in her ninety-second year. Mr. Cutler, who has a lively memory, was born in Weston-super-Mare, in Somersetshire. At an early age he went to sea as a greaser, afterward becoming an engineer, and was a member of the crew of the vessel which laid the first cable between Jamaica ana the American mainland. He was also one of the crew of the gunboat Bermezo, built on the Thames for the Argentine Government, on her delivery trip to Buenos Aires. While he was at sea his parents immigrated to New Zealand, and it was on their representations that he resolved to follow their example. He and Mrs. Cutler travelled to New Plymouth In the sailing ship Hurunui, There were 200 single young women among the passengers, who, Mr. Cutler says, were such a lively lot that they had to be locked up in their quarters every night, and constables were appointed. to see that the rules of the ship were not abused. Mr. Cutler was one of the passengers appointed for the purpose. Among the passengers by the Hurunui were the Rev. Mr. Cler’e, father of Mr. F. de J. Clere, architect, of Wellington, and Mr. Rod, father of Mr. James Rod, of Oriental Bay. After a few days in New Plymouth, Mr. and Mrs. Cutler came on to Wellington, where they have lived ever since. Mr. Cutler was one of the purchasers of a section when an estate (which included Daniell Street) was cut up. He paid £2/2/6 a foot for a 24ft. by 107 ft. lot, .but says that the price was too high, as a little later land in the same locality could bt purchased cheaper. A photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Cutler appears on page 9.
