BIGGER BATTLESHIPS
«, Decision By Britain, U.S.A. And France (Received March 23, 7.5 p.m.) London, March 23. The Australian Associated Press understands that, as the outcome of discussions in London, England, the United States and France have decided to invoke the escalator clauses of the London Naval Treaty and build 42,500-ton battleships with sixteen-inch guns. It is believed Britain’s two new battleships announced in the recent naval estimates will be of these dimensions. It is hoped to devise a formula by which European naval equilibrium under the London Treaty will not be disturbed and so enable the preservation of the ratios of the other European powers.
The possibility of the London Treaty signatories exceeding the 35,000-ton and fourteen-inch gun limit arose because of the fear that Japan was building or intending to build monster capital ships.
