ATTEMPTED THEFT ALLEGED
Driver Committed For Trial William James Gilbert, motor-driver, aged 26, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial by r Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday, for an alleged attempt on March 13 to steal from Lala Kika, fruiterer, Courtenay Place, £llO/15/-, and the alleged theft of an apron, valued at 3/9, from Hanji Hansji. Similar charges against Maxwell Joseph Daniel Byford, barman-porter and labourer, aged 35, were withdrawn. Gilbert was allowed bail of £5O in his own recognisance provided he made a daily report to the police. Mr. F. W. Ongley and Mr. R. Hardie Boys appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty. Sub-Inspector D. J. McLean conducted the case for the police. Lala Kika alleged that after closing his shop at 11.45 p.m. on March .12 and walking homeward he met two men whom he identified as accused, the taller, Gilbert, catching hold of him and trying to search his hip pocket, where he carried some notes, and his coat pocket, where the silver was.
