Twenty-Fifth / tai Meeting
The twenty-fifth annual meeting of the Ngaio Chess Club was held recently. Ihe president, Mr. F, J. Brooker, presided over a large attendance. Sympathetic reffc.renc<j was mfldc to the death of Mr. w. Watts, a staunch supporter of the club, one'of its most esteemed patrons and donor of the Watts Cup, which is competed for annually, and members present stood in silence as a mark of respect. It was decided to opeu the season with a lightning tourney, open to allcomers, to be held in the club-room on March 29, and a cordial welcome was extended to members of other clubs to take ; part. It, was decided, in view of the success of the previous year s arrangements, to adopt the same course, that one co;nplete round be played to decide the championship, with the usual handicap tournament to follow. Entries lor these competitions are to close on March 29, and the first round is scheduled to commence immediately after Easter. The club expects to enter a team in the Wellington league’s first grade competition. , The election of officers resulted as follows : — „ , -r Patrons, Mrs. E. E. Hicks, Colonel J. J. Esson, Messrs. H. L. Cummings, W. J. Carman, R. A. Wright, M.P., J. B. Lea, B J. Lynneberg G. A. Jones; president, Mr. F. J. Brisker; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. E. E. Hicks and A. B. Topp; secretary, Mr. H. N. Robie; treasurer. Mr. J. A. Glasgow; auditor, Mr. W. J. Hicks; handicapper, Mr. E. E. Hicks; committee, Messrs. H. Prince and C. L. Maloney; match committee. Messrs. T. G.. Foully and .J. S. Harrison ; delegates to Wellington Chess League, Messrs. C. t, Maloney and 11. N. Robie. In view of the long-drawn-out games which seemed to have become a feature of the league’s champion of champions contest, it was considered advisable that clocks should be used in this tournament, and the club’s delegates were in-, strutted to bring this matter forward at the next meeting of the league.
