VELVET APPLIQUE TO TRIM A WOOL CREPE FROCK

Here is an unusuaj trimming touch for a simple frock. The dress shown is of black wool crepe, and the trimming is of bright blue velvet applied with a tine blue silk cord and black silk embroidery thread. You will find it very easy to shape the applique in a design similar to the one shown here. The neck trimming is really a facing of the velvet turned to the right side and then shaped in an Irregular line. The outline given here in the diagram at the right may be used as a pattern by repeating it at in-

tervals and joining it with longer curved lines. The first step is to baste the edge of the velvet down as shown here at A, then shape a heavy paper pattern to use for outlining one side of the front of the neckline trimming ami one side of the back. These pattern pieces may be turned over in making the outline for the other side of the neck, and parts of them may later be used for the sleeve and pocket trimming. Outline the shape of the edge on the fabric, marking around the pattern with a soft pencil as shown at B. Now, stitch just inside this marking with silk thread that matches the velvet, as shown at C. The next step is to trim as close as possible to the stitching as at D. Very sharp small scissors are best to use for this, and the work is made easier if you slash the fabric well up into the curves in the design before you trim. If you cannot find fine cord of the right colour to use for the edge, twist several strands of rope silk embroidery thread together to make one. The cord is applied with blanket stitching, as shown here at E. These stitches should catch through both the applique material and the garment, fabric and should bold the cord so that it covers both the machine stitching and the raw edge of the applique.
