WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

The annual meeting of the Kimberley Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs. Hume, Plimmerton, being in the chair. A report on the year’s work was written and read by the retiring secretary, Mrs. Neilsen, after which a new committee and president were elected. The committee is as follows: Mrs.‘Pickering (president), Mesdames Hagan, Harvey, Crowe, Neas, Denton, Remner, Bryant, Smith, Feild, J. Griffith and F. Death. The retiring president, Mrs. Crowe, and Mrs. Evans, a prominent worker on the social committee, were both presented with posies by Mrs. McDonnell. The following are the results of the competitions: Best flower, Mrs. Evans, 1; Mrs. Smith, 2; Mrs. J. Griffith, 3. Six gems, Mrs. F. Death. Jar of flowers, Mrs. Crowe. The points prize donated by Mrs. Crowe for the past year for “the best flower in my garden” was won by Mrs. Evans, with Mrs. Crowe second. Mrs. J. Griffith and Mrs. Smith tied for third place. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mrs. Hume was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her attendance And presented with a bouquet of flowers. Hukanui. The annual meeting of the Hukanui Women’s Institute was held on March 2, the president, Mrs. Sutherland, pre siding. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:—President, Mrs. Sutherland (re-elected) ; secretarytreasurer, Mrs. Winham; committee, Mesdames Mabey, Mooney, Sunnese, G. Udy, Hunter, Twentyman, Harrington and Rice. During the afternoon Mrs. Sutherland presented the retiring secretary (Miss Laurence), who is shortly to be married, with a small token Of good will from her fellow members. The points prize for the year was won by Miss E. Gardiner, Mrs. Mabey being second. The competition for the month was won by Mrs. L. Udy, amd that for the best bloom by Mrs. A. Parker, with Mrs. Laurence second and Miss Q. Harrington third. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Mabey, Mooney and Parker. Hastwell.

Mrs. Elliott presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Hastwell institute. Arrangements were finalised for the celebration of the fourth birthday, which is being held this month. The competitions for the month were: Seniors, plum jam, Mrs. McKay I, Miss Fredrickson 2, Mrs. Broadbent 3. The junior competition, pikelets, was won by Misses I. Madsen 1, B. Kenny 2, K. Larsen 3. Mrs. K. Ngatuere and Miss B. Kenny judged the senior class, and Miss Fredrickson and Miss E. Dick the juniors. Mrs. Madsen was first in the best flower in the garden competition, Mrs. Elliott 2, and Miss B. Kenny 3. Mrs. J. Dick and Mrs. R. McKay judged. A vote of thanks was accorded the judges. The game arranged by Misses K. Larsen and B. Kenny was won by Mrs. Dick, Misses E. Dick and H. Madsen, 2; and Misses J. Elliott, I. Madsen and O. Halberg, 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Thorby and Broadbent, and Miss P. Thorby. "Pleasure Cruise" The rooms of the National Club are to be subtly transformed into a pleasure yacht on Saturday night, for which the junior members and their friesHs are to be purely nautical, but landlubbers will be welcome on board in cruising attire. Cabin boys will wait on the guests, arid a captain, recruited from the senior ranks, will take charge of the cruise, the arrangements of which are in the hands of Miss Bobby Hope Gibbons and Miss Lorna Adams, assisted by members of the committee of the younger set.
