Yesterday was the twentieth day of absolute drought in large areas in Britain and temperatures up to 69 degrees were recorded, providing the highest readings since early last October. March has been the driest, sunniest, and warmest for many years, and the average day temperatures have exceeded that recorded in any March for 98 years.' There is no\sign of the dry spell breaking. One result of the unusually dry season has been the number of severe heath fires at Cannock Chase. Exmoor. New. Forest, and some Surrey commons.
