HUTT VALLEY LINE

No Present Intention To Electrify It DESTINATION SIGNS ON MULTIPLE UNITS “1 have no knowledge of any present intention to electrify the Hutt line,” said the Assistant-General Manager of Railways, Mr. E. Casey, last night when asked why the interchangeable destination signs displayed by the electric multiple units which have just arrived from England include stations in the Hutt Valley. Mr. Casey said it had been decided when the units were ordered to include all the names on the line to Upper Hutt in ease at some future time it might be decided to electrify that area. The destination signs would then be available. The destination signs that happened to be showing yesterday ou the two coaches that were landed on Aotea Quay this week from the Brisbane Starshowed the following words:-— Plimmerton, Stopping all Stations. Pitcaithlys, First Stop Lower Hutt. Woburn, First Stop Petone. Plimmerton is within the section of the Main Trunk line which is being electrified, but Pitcaithlys and Woburn are on the two Hutt Valley lines, the electrification of which has not yet been announced. The rolling stock which has arrived is intended for the Wellington-Johnson-ville route, but could be used also on the Tawa Flat deviation and on the rest of the electrified section of the Main Trunk, which extends as far as Paekakariki.
