His Excellency the Governor-General received Monsieur Andre Pouquet, French Consul for New Zealand, at Government House yestesday morning. During yesterday* morning her Excellency Lady Galway, attended by Mrs. R. G. Byron, paid a visit to the children’s creche at the Wellington railway station and subsequently visited the Karitane Hospital at Melrose. Mr. K. Parkinson and the Hon. Mrs. Parkinson were the guests of their Excellencies at luncheon yesterday. • Ministerial. The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, returned to Wellington from Auckland yesterday. The Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour, will return to Wellington from the South Island this morning. The Hon. Mr. Justice Hunter arrived at Wellington yesterday in the steamer express from the south. Third Officer J. Philp, of the Wellington Fire Brigade, is to leave on a visit to England in abotit a fortnight’s time. Mr. W. Lukq# of George H. Scales Ltd., left Wellington last night in the steamer express for the south. > Mr. F. W. Redmond, Ballaret, who is on a holiday visit to New Zealand, was a guest at the Wellington Rotary Club’s luncheon yesterday. Mr. T. O. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation,, left Wellington last night in the Limited express for Auckland.

Mr. Colin Clark lecturer in statistics at Cambridge University, has been appointed Director of the Bureau of Industry and State Statistician in Queensland, in succession to Professor Brigden, who is now Director of National Insurance. Mr. Clark is teniporprily lecturer in economics at the University of Western Australia. He has lectured at Melbourne and Sydney Universities.

Mr. W. A. Roberts, who is retiring from his position in the Miramar office of the Wellington Gas Company after 30 years’ service, was farewelled recently at a large gathering of fellow workers. Mr. M. J. Kennedy, the general manager, in presenting Mr. Roberts with a travelling bag and gold-mounted fountain pen and pencil, congratulated him on his long and faithful service. Similar expressions of goodwill were made by Mr. J. Hungerford, the company’s engineer, and by Mr. E. Banks on behalf of the town staff.
