Wellington Wool Sale. THE EXPERTS’ VIEW

Reports Of Selling Brokers PRICES OF WELL-KNOWN CLIPS The reports of the seven selling brokers on yesterday's wool sale, together with their principal realisations, are as follows :— DALGETY AND CO., LTD. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report:—The fourth Wellington wool sale was held today, when the associated brokers offered 26,000 bales, of which our catalogue comprised 4600. The offering consisted mainly of lateshorn wools and carried more condition than at the previous sales —weatherstained wool* were also much in evidence. -There was the usual full bench of buyers operating and bidding throughout was keen and animated. Growers met the market freely and 90 per cent, of the offering-was sold at auction. Bradford took the bulk of the offering, while Japan gave strong support on crossbreds showing length and style. The Continent were less in evidence than at previous sales, but took the larger portion of the fine wools, and Canada also gave good support. Local mills operated very sparingly, most of their requirements being secjired at earlier sales. The market ruled firm on late rates and compared with the last Wellington sale showed an advance of approximately Id. per lb. for crossbreds, while halfbreds and merinos can be quoted as firm. Skirtings were from par to Id. better, but lambs’ wool, which has been selling particularly well this season, met with less demand and showed a decrease of approximately Id, 'per lb. for best lines, and 2d. per for seedy and inferior grades. Our top price was 15Jd., which was paid for a speciality lot of Lincoln hoggets of the “Surreydale” clip. Murray Roberts and Co., Ltd., report: —Since "our sale last mouth there has been a rise in crossbreds, and we are pleased to record an advance of about Id. per lb. compared with February rates. Finer descriptions, however, have remained more or less stationary. Our offering for this time of the year was a fairly attractive one, and contained a larger proportion of coarse wools than our earlier sales. It elicited keen competition, resulting in the disposal ot 93 per cent, under the hammer.

Although prices are much lower than last”season, it was gratifying to observe a lively desire on the part of buyers to fill their orders, the sale being animated throughout. Bradford and the Continent again bought freely, being well supported by Japan. Compared with the excellent realisations of last year, this season ha.-j been disappointing, but prices are not ruinously low, and with the exception of the

finer sorts, are above the 1935-36 level. With conditions as they are in Europe, combined with the trouble in the Far East, we think growers can count themselves fortunate in receiving prices that, so far as crossbreds are concerned, compare more than favourably wjth those of two years ago. Finer wools, however, appear to be out of favour in t-be meantime, the market for which has been far from encouraging. Fleece in most instances can be quoted a full Id. dearer than Wellington’s February sale. Compared with recent sales, good style wools were firm but somewhat erratic due to several speciality orders being in the'market. Average topmaking wools, of which there was a large weight, were, if anything, slightly firmer and sold most satisfactorily, some clips showing seed selling particularly well. Lambs were rather disappointing, mid compared with our last sale were Id. easier for good style lots, and second and inferior sorts were as much as 2d. lower. Heavy seedy lambs, however, held up well.

Skirtings, which have been fairly steady throughout the Reason, were firm to-day. LEVIN AND CO., LTD. . Levin and Co., Limited, report: The fourth sale of the season was held today when catalogues totalling approximately 25,000 bales were submitted to a full and representative bench of buyers. To the above offering we contributed 5349 bales and sold 90 per cent, under the'hammer. Our offering consisted mainly of average top-making wools, with a few halfbreds from Nelson and Marlborough districts. Generally speaking the offering was disappointing, and below the usual March standard. Super lots were few, and brought very satisfactory prices. A survey of the offering confirms the hard times experienced during the past growing season, and it is now possible to correctly estimate the effect that the bad season has had on the wool sold in the Wellington selling centre. It is safe to say that the shortage in weight brought about by the adverse seasonal conditions is approximately 17 per cent. The greater part of this‘loss in weight is noticeable in the Wairarapa and Marlborough districts. . Despite the disturbing news of the past few days from the Continent,., and the unsettled state of. the world’s markets, there prevailed an optimistic atmosphere throughout the sale to-day, and prices compared with our last sale here in February, showed an increase of Id per lb. on crossbreds and halfbreds. Bidding was keen, animated, and well spread, a noticeable feature being the competition for the first time this season of Japan, who since the opening <ff the sales here hdve Been content to remain inactive. Bradford and the Continent competed freely for their requirements, and again lifted the bulk of the offering. • Merino wool, of which there was very little offering, showed little improvement on our last sale. Competition for lambs’ wool was not so keen as in previous sales when in short supply, and sold, slightly in buyers’ favour. Bellies and pieces showed Jd to Jd advance. !The following range gives a comparison of prices for our February sale and to-

The New Zealand Loan .and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, reports: The fourth wool sale in this centre tor the current season was held yesterday when a total catalogue of approximately 26,000 bales was submitted, of which our quota was 3400 bales. There was a lull and representative bench of buyers who, from the outset competed keenly for the various lots as they came under the hummer. Competition was more wiclely spread than at the previous sale in this centre, Japan, Germany, France and Bradford all being- in the market. Comparing prices with those ruling in the South Island, crossbreds can be quoted in sellers’ favour, but halfbreds and merino showed no change, but, comparing prices with the previous sale here on February 16, crossbreds can be quoted a full penny dearer, but lambs’ wool, best sores, were about one penny easier, while inferior and seconds were sometimes twopence cheaper. The wool opened up in a fair condition, but the bulk of it could only be described as top-making sorts. Taken all through, considering the class of wool, yesterday s sale must be considered very satisfactory, and we are pleased to report that we succeeded in disposing of ninety-five per cent, of our catalogue. NEW ZEALAND FARMERS’ CO-OP. DISTRIBUTING CO. The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Distributing Co., Ltd., reports as follows: At the fourth Wellington sale we again offered a very attractive catalogue comprising 3576 bales to a full and representative bench of buyers.. All sections of the trade were operating freely, Japan and Bradford being particularly strong, and we sold 1)6 per cent, of our catalogue at auction. Well-grown and skirted lots again ex-

pcrieuced keen competition, and growers who classed and skirted their clips to-day received prices to compensate them 101 the additional care they displayed in the get-up of their wool. All fleece w °ol showed an increase on our February rates, but lambs’ wool sold erratically and in most cases at lower prices than realised in February. , o The following are some of our quotations:—■ . The Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., reports: Catalogues totalling approximately 24,000 bales were offered to a full bench of buyers. From the outset, bidding was exceptionally keen and well Bradford appeared to dominate the market, closely followed by Japan and th® Continent. We had an excellent sale, having sold more than 98 per cent, of uor offering under the hammer at prices averaging Id. per lb. over'those ruling at our last sale. All types and classes showed an appreciation of values, with the exception Of lambs and down wools, these being somewhat difficult of sale, and many lines were passed in. Taken right through, the sale- may bo described as satisfactory, and it is to be hoped that a higher range of values has now been established for the rest of the season.

WRIGHT, STEPHENSON AND ABRAHAM AND WILLIAMS,.

Wright, Stpehenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report as follows:—We offered a catalogue of 3801 bales at to-djy’s sale and disposed of 92 per cent, upder the hammer. As in previous sales this season, our offering reflected the effects of the adverse climatic conditions experienced during the period of growth. To-day’s prices, in comparison with the last Wellington sale held on February 16, showed an increase of approximately .’ld. on practically all sorts with the exception of merino, Southdown and lambs’ wool. The market, however, was erratic and it was at times hard to reconcile the difference in realisations. Bradford and ’ the Continent were much in evidence, and Japan bought much more wool than she has done in any previous sale in this centre during the current season.

The unsettled conditions, both political and economic, still existing throughout the world, have ha<7 a most disturbing effect on the wool market. Bradford during ths present season has been operating with caution and restraint, although usually she is the mainstay of our market. The Continent, under difficult conditions, has been a surprisingly good customer.

America has offered little assistance; in fact, she has stood aloof consistently, and it does not appear as if she will be a buyer of any consequence for some time.

Japan has supported the market somewhat spasmodically, but her operations, although curtailed, have helped values over the season as a whole. In"*this connection it is well to keep in mind that Japan buys always in the country of production. It is to be hoped the current selling season will close with comparatively clear decks. The existence of unsold wool is always known to the trade, and a heavy accumulation would be a menace to the successful realisation of next year’s clip. Some of our best realisations are as follows :— .Halfbred.— Challenge, 10 bales at 13id,
